For my Grandmom's 70th Birthday, I did some sketches of her and my late grandfather. The originals are pencil drawings on good sketch paper. I did the sketches separately, and photoshopped them together for a finished printed 5x7. She got both the sketches and the finished image for her birthday. ![]()
I haven't been able to update this blog recently because, despite the bad economy, I've had a large stream of freelance work, as well as a lot going on for Easy 8 Software. This is the first week in a few months that I've had no work, and I'm happy that I have a second to collect myself and update on what I've been doing.
For those that don't know, we're going to be releasing our first commercial game on a widely-known platform soon, the iPhone and iPod Touch. What better game than one of my personal favorites and one of our most popular, Hurdler! We've been working with a talented Mac programmer to help us port the game to Xcode, but we've also been trying to spruce the game up a bit in terms of presentation so that those that buy it feel they got their money's worth. After all, the first thing the user sees when playing a game are the graphics, right? ![]()
My Wacom Tablet's been getting quite a workout lately. I've been doing lots of Hurdler illustrations for the various screens throughout the game, as well as the interface design (buttons, special effects for user input). Below are some examples of these. The last screenshot depicts the areas of the screen that you will touch to control Hurdler, similar to how you'd press the keys on a PC's keyboard.
In addition to win and lose screens and such, I've also been doing the usual promo art thing. I had actually drawn up this promo art for Hurdler 2 a while back, but decided to change it up just a bit for the iPhone game. Notice my mad "modular" art skills ![]()
Finally, we've gotta depict the game on the apps screen somehow, right? The two images below will be first thing you see after installing either build of the game on your iPhone/iPod Touch (depending on if you get the "lite" version for free, or pay for the full game).
As you can see, this has kept me busy for quite a while. This is far from all the artwork I've been doing for this game, as I've done much more interface work than just this (I've made LOTS of buttons and menu text). Look forward to seeing all of this stuff in action within the next week or two, as our Mac programmer is putting the finishing touches on it before submitting to the apps store. Makes me wish I could afford the AT&T plan ![]()

It's been a while since I've updated. I've had two big freelance gigs going on at the same time, so it's been tough (very little time to myself to play with 3d). However, I've recently signed up for Twitter due to a few friends from college coercing me into it. I've been having a lot of fun with it.
If you like to tweet, hit me up @ EdwardCoyle86. I'll put a link up here when I get some time.
So I've been doing a lot more website work lately than I would have liked to do, but it's all good. I'm happy with the results of my recent overhaul of The Games Page's Back Room. Before the overhaul, it was very plain and a little hard to look at in my opinion. Many of the visuals didn't match the design, and were unrefined. I decided that since the Back Room is the place that Gary and I have set up for people to just come "chill and play some games", to make it feel like you've just walked into someone's newly-finished, game-room-styled basement. It's nice and dimly lit in the background, with the main focus on the table where the games are laid out. The interface is clean and easy to understand, and there are some nice Javascript rollovers to finish off the buttons.
I personally think this is the nicest looking site I've built so far, and I think I've just raised the bar for myself. From this point on I'll be striving to make my designs look even better than this. Click the image below to see a screenshot of the site, and please make sure that you visit the Back Room and enjoy the games that Gary and I have been working on recently.
Also, I've been freelancing recently at D4 Creative Group, the ad agency in Philadelphia that I interned at during school. During my 2-week freelance venture, I worked on 3 different commercials for Comcast Cable. I'm not new to working for Comcast (as my demo reel actually has some footage of a commerical I helped complete last year), but nonetheless it's more experience in the bag. When I can get copies of the work I did, I'll make a Comcast reel or something... ![]()
I also had the opportunity to work for Navteq again, this time ON-SITE. Unfortunately I turned them down because I was working at D4 at the time. Now that D4 doesn't exactly need me, I'm kicking myself for it because it was 5 weeks of guaranteed work. Oh well, next time I will absolutely take up that offer.
That's all I have for now. I may update within the next few days with some colored photoshop's I've been doing. I also have a new character model in the works that's slowly but surely been getting done. But we'll see...
About a week or so ago, I made some major graphical and layout changes to my resume. However, since I'm just a tad forgetful, it never made it onto the blog afterward... ![]()
Anyways, you can now access the updated PDF from the resume page.
As for the artwork I should be uploading daily, my current job is taking up a lot of time so I haven't had as much downtime as I used to. However, I do have a new character model in the works that I may just have some untextured shots of to put here soon ![]()
Also, starting next week, I'll be putting a lot of design time into finishing up a major TGP game. Gary and myself are hoping to have the game done sometime in December, so keep your fingers crossed. I may post some screenshots of that game here too, once I get it looking spiffy. Speaking of games, make sure you check out the Backroom and play Rabbit Stew, because it's just amazing.
A quick photoshop of me. I just felt like sketching on my tablet, and then I added some simple color. It's not done, but at least I did some sketching.
It's been a while since I updated my blog. My original goal was to do a sketch or a model once a day to keep my skills sharp. Unfortunately, I've been spending tons of time doing other things, and I've managed to land myself a few small jobs in the process. I've got myself a part-time job starting soon, and I am in the middle of a few freelance gigs. I've also been doing some pixel art for one of Gary's games, and I've also been trying to learn the basics of Bodypaint 3D. So unfortunately, I've been slacking off a bit, haha.
So hopefully, I can once again begin to keep this blog up. I also want to redo the design a bit to make it look a little prettier.

I decided to model something today since it's been a few weeks without touching Max for me. I looked around my bedroom, and my eyes locked in on a little monster statue that my girlfriend had painted for me at one of those ceramic-painting places. Below are some photos of that monster. He's my subject for this project...
I had a request from one of the TGP regulars to include information on each of my posts about how long I've spent on the whole 3D pipeline. I've gone back to each of my portfolio work samples and added a blurb about this. Just thought y'all should know.
By the way, if you know someone that would be interested in my services (be it building a website, creating graphics or entire commercial pieces), please contact me or have those that are interested contact me! I am in the market for work right now and would be glad to assist in whatever I can.
Thanks!
So tonight, I'm releasing my new Art Blog to the public! W00t.
As I stated before, this is going to be somewhat of a professional artists blog. I will be updating this often starting this week so that I can keep my skills sharp, as well as provide an outlet for my creativity for the world -- and potential employers -- to see. Hopefully, it all works out!
Thanks for viewing my blog!
Hello anyone and everyone! ![]()
I've officially decided to start my own art blog. I'm doing this for a number of reasons... One, because I need a space where I can be creative and show that creativity to the world. Two, because a few friends of mine have told me that they would like to see more of what I can do. Three, because I'm bored due to being an unemployed college grad. Not to mention, The Games Page is taking a bit of a hiatus while we plan some new things, so I need a new website to pretend to update.
So, with the opening of this blog, I hope to accomplish a few things that I've wanted to do for a long time. I really want to be able to not just show the world my artwork, but I hope to be able to use it as a resource for my eventual employment in creative industries. I hope to bring anyone that's willing to read a little bit closer to who I am.
I'll be trying to update this blog at least once every two days, if not more often than that. Keep checking back for more updates!
